Kazakhstan & terrorism

Мужчины не плачут...Once, while watching the events in Budennovsk on the television set, I thought, as many in Kazakhstan do now - that this was all far away and it would never touch me. But the three huge acts of terror in the world - the destruction of the Twin Towers in New York, the seizure of hostages at the Moscow theater at Dubrovka, and the seizure of hostages at the school in Beslan - each of them brought grief to families in Kazakhstan.

Many in Kazakhstan have relatives, children, friends, and loved ones who travel to Russia and to Moscow. At any moment one of them can find him or herself in the same situation that we, Svetlana Gubareva and Natasha Gutnova, did.

I could not save my family, and I lost that, which I held most dear in life. No amount of money can ever replace this. What I am now doing is an attempt to protect others, so that they might not be poisoned with gas, as was my daughter Alexandra Letyago in that Moscow theater, so that they might not be blasted by tanks, as was Zaur Gutnov in that Beslan school.

'Novyy vestnik', Karaganda

By Elena Ulyankina

On July 16th the Karaganda resident who died after the assault of the theatrical center on Dubrovka would have been 18.

Five days before Sasha’s 18th birthday, victims of the Dubrovka terror act and members of the ‘Nord-Ost’ public organization, of which her mother, Svetlana Gubareva, is a member, filed a petition with the Russian prosecutor general. They are demanding a criminal case be opened against members of the operational headquarters that freed the hostages. Before this, on May 19th, the investigation had been halted.

“You cannot let people forget this”

Detailed information about the tragedy in the Dubrovka theatrical center can now be found on the Internet by typing just one web address: www.nord-ost.org. A memorial site, dedicated to ‘Nord-Ost’, was set up by a group of single-minded people, one of whom is Karaganda resident Svetlana Gubareva.

«I wished to attract attention to the tragedy»

A book on 'Nord-Ost' has been published. One of the authors is Karagandan Svetlana Gubareva

Every page of this book is a valuable document. In it are the affidavits of the former hostages who lived through that nightmare at the theatrical center on Dubrovka. There are also the autopsies and legal resolutions about the criminal case, papers that until recently were hightly classified.
The authors of this book believe that everyone has a right to know the truth about 'Nord-Ost'. That is, all those who wish to know the truth.

ZHANNA WENT TO WORK ON SEPTEMBER 11TH AND NEVER CAME BACK…
Written by Валерий Цой

On September 11th, 2001, Kazakhstan resident Valery A. Tsoy lost his daughter Zhanetta, who worked as a translator in the office of a large company in the World Trade Center in New York City.

ImageOn August 23rd, 2001, we saw our daughter Zhanetta off to the USA.  She entered into a lottery in which you can win a Green Card.  And so it happened, she won.  She got a visa in January, and in August they went to America as a family.

In New York City she was offered work as a translator in the main office. She was in seventh heaven.  She was supposed to go to work on September 17th, but they asked her to come in a week early.

If had taken her whole vacation she probably would still be alive.  But they asked, and she went.

She went to work on September 10th.  On the 11th the tragedy happened.  What can you do?  You can’t escape Fate.
