On September 11th, 2001, Kazakhstan resident Valery A. Tsoy lost his daughter Zhanetta, who worked as a translator in the office of a large company in the World Trade Center in New York City.

On August 23rd, 2001, we saw our daughter Zhanetta off to the USA.  She entered into a lottery in which you can win a Green Card.  And so it happened, she won.  She got a visa in January, and in August they went to America as a family.

In New York City she was offered work as a translator in the main office. She was in seventh heaven.  She was supposed to go to work on September 17th, but they asked her to come in a week early.

If had taken her whole vacation she probably would still be alive.  But they asked, and she went.

She went to work on September 10th.  On the 11th the tragedy happened.  What can you do?  You can’t escape Fate.

At the time I was driving home from work in my car.  I turned on the radio, and just then they were broadcasting the news.  We already knew where she would be working when she went to America.  We knew that she would be working at the World Trade Center, and even knew which floor — the 98th.  Their main office is located in the Twin Towers.

And so my heart sank when I heard it all.  I stopped the car and turned the radio up louder, and I understood that terrorists had really attacked the towers.

I came home and turned on the television right away.  I have cable.  At that time they were showing the airplane as it crashed into the north tower.  We didn’t know in which tower (she was), the north or south.

We all kept hoping, maybe she hadn’t gone to work?  Maybe she stayed home?  She had vacation until the 17th.  That’s what we all thought.  We started phoning.  We tried calling, but the phones wouldn't work.  Communication with America was down for three days.

And then on the fourth day I got in touch with the landlord of the apartment that they rented in New Jersey.  And he said: Zhanna went to work on September 11th and never came back.

On September 17th my wife and I flew to the United States. We started searching all over New York, in the civilian and military hospitals.  We were hoping that maybe she was laying somewhere and couldn’t talk and wasn’t able to make herself known.

We searched for her for a month and a half.  It was no use.  But, in December, we got a message from the FBI that they found our daughter’s body.

We decided to lay her to rest there in America, so that her husband and daughter would know where her grave was.  But we will visit her.

And that’s what we did.  Every year we visited her grave.  But we couldn’t this year or in 2005.  Financial difficulties.

We haven’t been there for two years. But we’re saving money for next year.  Maybe we’ll be able to go.
