 Once, while watching the events in Budennovsk on the television set, I thought, as many in Kazakhstan do now - that this was all far away and it would never touch me. But the three huge acts of terror in the world - the destruction of the Twin Towers in New York, the seizure of hostages at the Moscow theater at Dubrovka, and the seizure of hostages at the school in Beslan - each of them brought grief to families in Kazakhstan.
Many in Kazakhstan have relatives, children, friends, and loved ones who travel to Russia and to Moscow. At any moment one of them can find him or herself in the same situation that we, Svetlana Gubareva and Natasha Gutnova, did.
I could not save my family, and I lost that, which I held most dear in life. No amount of money can ever replace this. What I am now doing is an attempt to protect others, so that they might not be poisoned with gas, as was my daughter Alexandra Letyago in that Moscow theater, so that they might not be blasted by tanks, as was Zaur Gutnov in that Beslan school.

KND plans bring citizens home from Syria through peaceful negotiations Today the KND (Kazakhstan Security Service) officially confirmed that citizens of Kazakhstan have actually gone to fight in Syria. According to operational data, about a hundred of our fellow citizens from different regions are presently located in the zone of conflict. KND officers are now carefully checking them out, and plan peaceful negotiations in order to repatriate those who have committed no serious crimes. Kendebay Adambekov, Chief of Staff of the Antiterrorist Center of the KND of the Republic of Kazakhstan: “We are conducting measures through their parents and close relatives in order to bring them home. For each man’s return, their family will have certain decisions made in their favor. This is for the return of those who have not committed crimes, who were unable to participate or to act in a terrorist group.”

France 24 reported that about 150 of our fellow citizens, allegedly members of the same family, went to this Arab republic to wage holy war. On the site was a 20-minute video, which has already been blocked “because of scenes containing violence”, according to Astana TV.

 On April 29th, special inter-district criminal court #2 in the Atyrau region announced its verdict against a group arrested in 2012 on charges of “intent to commit a terrorist act”. The trial, presided over by Judge Gulmira Daulyetova, began on March 27th. During the month-long trial the courthouse was under tight security, with video surveillance and officers from the regional police force.

Court in western Kazakhstan district sentences 3 for financing terrorists  In Uralsk (Oral) city court, three persons were sentenced to three years imprisonment for providing financial assistance to a terrorist group, according to the court press service in the west Kazakhstan province.
“On February 11th, 2013, Uralsk city court received a criminal case against three residents of western Kazakhstan who committed an offense under Article 233–3, part 2, of the criminal codex. The court found that the individuals sent remittances from December 2011 to May 2012 that were often used to help finance activities by members of a terrorist organization,” stated court spokesperson Gulmira Kenzhegalieva to a correspondent from ‘KazTAG’ on Wednesday.
