Near Anya
Четверг, 28 Август 2008

On August 30th, our columnist Anna Politkovskaya would have turned 50. She lived a year less than her favorite poet, Marina Tsvetaeva, who once wrote in a letter to Boris Pasternak: “All of the lightning strikes you, but you must live.”

All the lightning also struck Anya, and though she very much wanted to live, and you can feel this as soon as you read the recollections by her daughter Vera that are published here. No one could force Anya to betray Tsvetaeva’s Law: the Law of the Outstretched Hand. Living under this law, she was always there, where she was needed: near the hospital cot of a wounded captain, near the parents of a girl who had just been abducted and raped, near the hostages at the theatrical center…

Response of legislators to draft a law on victims
Вторник, 05 Август 2008
On Monday, July 4, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at the presidium of the government said that the threat of new terrorist attacks in the country remains very serious. He also added that tens of billions of rubles would be allocated in order to implement state programs to combat terrorism. According to the newspaper Kommersant, the Federal «Antiterrorism» program was allocated 717.7 million rubles in the 2005 budget.

The publication reported that, according to official figures, the open portion of the Federal «Anti-terror» Program was 105 million in 2005. In 2007, it was 85 million rubles. Very few people, however, are interested in the fate of the tens of thousands of who have been victims of terrorism in Russia.

Суббота, 05 Июль 2008

However, Ms. Milichuk's letter discusses already submitted documents (I quote: «documents, which were deposited with the Registry in connection with the above application»). Thus, Mr. Trunov's conjectures (I quote Kommersant):
