 Premier at the Sakharov Museum of the film: «Anna Politkovskaya: Seven years on the frontline»
On June 24th the Sakharov Museum held a premier of a Dutch film about the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, according to a report by SOBKOR.RU
The film, produced in 2008 by director Masha Novikova, is titled «Anna Politkovskaya: Seven years on the frontline». In May the film was premiered by the international human rights organization Amnesty International.
Participants in the film spoke before the assembled audience: the director of the human rights organization «Civil Cooperation», Svetlana Gannushkina, and the journalist from Novaya Gazeta who conducted an investigation into Politkovskaya's murder, Vyacheslav Izmailov. «The usual response to another's misfortune, nothing to see here, move along, didn't happen,» said Gannushkina about Politkovskaya. In her opinion, Vladimir Putin's words that Anna had no influence on the community, is a lie. Izmailov, in turn, noted that Novaya Gazeta knows those who directly ordered Politkovskaya's murder. He did not rule out that Ramzan Kadyrov, the president of Chechnya, was behind the crime.
The film discusses Anna Politkovskaya's activities over the last seven years of her life, the period in which she worked at Novaya Gazeta. Documental footage is shown of the «cleansings» in Chechnya, in which peaceful citizens disappear and are tortured and murdered. In particular, the film highlights in detail the case of Colonel Yuri Budanov and the tragedies at 'Nord-Ost' and Beslan. In addition, the film utilizes portions of Anna Politkovskaya's speeches at the first conference of the «Another Russia» conference in 2006.
«Anya was a soldier, one who didn't survive seven years of war,» said Izmailov at the end of the film.
Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in October, 2006, in the stairwell of her home. Her colleagues are certain that the reason for her murder was the journalist's professional activity.
