Preliminary Investigation into the Murder of Anna Politkovsk

MOSCOW, 18 JUN — RIA Novosti. The investigating committee from the Russian State Prosecutor's Office has completed its preliminary investigation into the murder case involving Anna Politkovksya, reported Vladimir Markin, an official representative of the committee to RIA Novosti.
News reviewer for Novaya Gazeta, Anna Politkovskaya, was killed on the evening of October 7th, 2006, in the stairwell of her home on Lesnaya Street in Moscow.
«Today, in accordance with Article 215 of the Criminal Procedural Codex of the Russian Federation, the main directorate of investigations from the state prosecutor's office has declared that it has completed all its investigative activities and finished the preliminary investigation,» said Markin.
According to Markin, three figures stand accused of the journalist's murder: Sergey Hajikurbanov, and the brothers Jabrail and Ibrahim Mahmudov.
Markin added: «Yet another figure — Pavel Ryaguzov — stands accused of committing an early crime in conjunction with Hajikurbanov, as provided for by Articles 286 and 163 of the Russian Criminal Codex, i.e.: exceeding one's official duties and commission of extortion in excess of US$10,000.»
He noted that during the course of the investigation a host of figures were ruled out as complicit in Politkovskaya's murder, in particular the former governor of Chechnya's Achha-Martanovsky region, Shamil Buraev. Therefore the criminal investigation of these persons has ceased.
«Since yesterday the investigation intends to begin carrying out the requirements of the Russian criminal codex allowing the plaintiffs and defendands to acquaint themselves with materials from the criminal case,» the official stated.
«Resulting from this case, a separate criminal case was started with regards to the perpetrator of the murder of Rustam Mahmudov and others, the investigation into which is still ongoing,» added Markin.
