Any story of the events in Beslan should come from the source — the children. Eva Yuart is convinced of this. She is a BBC correspondent and the author of two films about the school hostage tragedy in this Osetian city. Eva arrived in Beslan soon after the shootings that killed hundreds of children and adults on September 3rd, 2004. She got to know several families, members of whom lived through the three nightmarish days that followed the seizure of hostages. Several of them lost parents, brothers, or sisters in Beslan School #1. In 2005, after the end of her trip, the film ‘The Children of Beslan' was made. Like a colorful mosaic that gladdens the eye and summons a smile, there is now a small lane in the botanical garden of the Stary Oskol Medical College. After approaching a bit closer to this beauty, the visitor becomes serious and pensive. He sees the inscription: «Lane of Roses, in memory of the children who died during the storming of Nord-Ost on October 26th, 2002. Students and faculty from the college built the lane on the eve of the sixth anniversary of this terrible tragedy.» Ten children died at ‘Nord-Ost'. What can be more awful than the death of a child? A senseless and cruel death, death at the hands of a grown up who is required by the natural order to protect and raise a child. Comments (1) | Views: 4763 | E-mail |

Today Beslan is preparing for the fifth anniversary of the tragedy. Each is preparing in his own way: the victims are fixing up the cemetery, which they clean almost every day. Just as five years ago these mothers got their children ready for the first school bell, now they continue what they have done for the last five years with what remained afterwards. They blow away the dust, rake the lawns, stroke and kiss the faces of their loved ones — faces etched into the marble of the grave markers.
