 A criminal case under the terrorism statutes has been initiated due to a March 9th explosion on Michurinsky Prospect in Moscow. RIA ‘Novosti’, citing a source in law enforcement, reported on this.According their information, an explosive device was planted at the bus stop. It was packed with shrapnel and had a damage radius of 50 meters. “It was only due to luck that no one was injured,” the source said. Earlier, an iPhone user near the scene wrote on his blog that the bomb was packed with chopped up nails. ‘Interfax’, in turn, citing the law enforcement source, reported that a case was also initiated under statutes covering illicit trafficking in weapons and explosives. Previously the agency had cited a police source that stated that the case could be prosecuted as “hooliganism” (criminal vandalism). Meanwhile, traffic on Michurinsky Prospect, which was restricted following the blast, has returned to normal. The explosion at the bus stop by near the Russian FSB Academy occurred at around 4:30 pm. As a result, several cars were damaged, but no one was injured. The power of the explosion, according to various sources, ranged from 200 to 400 grams of TNT. The iPhone blogger cited witnesses who stated that the bomb was hidden in the snow between the bus stop and a pedestrian path, and that the size of the crater left by the explosion was about a meter (1 yard) in diameter and about 30 centimeters (1 foot) deep.
