«Putin's course» led to court
Written by Наталия Александрова
Четверг, 22 Ноябрь 2007
Ella Kesayeva, co-chairman of the 'Voice of Beslan' organization, has been brought up on administrative charges. The reason was a November 7th rally organized by 'Voice of Beslan' and 'Mothers of Beslan'.

According to the indictment protocol, Ella Kesayeva is accused of putting up a road sign «without coordinating with traffic authorities.» Mostly women attended the rally, relatives of hostages slain in the assault (on the Beslan school). Only Ella Kesaeva was indicted, however, since she was the chief organizer of the rally. Kesayeva believes that the delay in the indictment is connected with orders from above. «If it was only the initiative of local police or local prosecutor,» she noted. «It would have been done in only a few days.»

On November 7th the women set up a sign with the inscription «Putin's Course» next to the Beslan grammar school, with an arrow pointing in the direction of the school. Participants of the rally were protesting against an expanded advertising campaign in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his policies.
The sign stayed up for several hours. Law enforcement officials were present during the installation of the sign, and dismantled it as soon as the protesters had dispersed. Despite the indictment, the organization is going to install a few more such signs near the school. «We believe that this is not breaking the law,» said Kesayeva. «It isn't a traffic sign, it’s a sign, a poster. Now the election campaigns are going on and we are conveying our position to the public, to the citizens. And we have that right.» Ella Kesayeva believes that people need to be reminded of where Putin's course has led: «The Beslan tragedy and 'Nord-Ost' and many, many terror attacks, and millions more homeless in the country. There has never before been such a situation in Russia with regard to common people and the children.»
The date of the start of the trial is still unknown. Ella Kesayeva stressed that she is not going to evade justice, but will defend herself without recourse to legal counsel.

Relatives of those slain in the storming of the school have several times attempted to reach out to the authorities in order to achieve an objective investigation of the tragedy. In early November, representatives of 'Mothers of Beslan' sent the president, via Vice-premier Sergei Ivanov, a video message from the victims of the Beslan tragedy, which was web hosted on newtimes.ru. Nevertheless, at this time there has been no response from the authorities.
