The Moscow Prosecutor's Office opened a criminal investigation into looting at the Dubrovka theatrical center. Dubrovka became infamous during the events of October 23–26, 2002, when actors, staff, and spectators were taken hostage by a group of terrorists, resulting in the death of 130 hostages, including our fellow countryman Maksim Mikhailov. His wife Alena was lucky to remain alive, and is still a victim of the case. In the inspection protocol of the auditorium, investigators noted inside Maksim's jacket money in the amount of 254 US dollars and 3,150 Russian rubles. The entire amount disappeared, however. Now, taking into account non-pecuniary damages, lost interest, and other factors, the attorney representing the interests of the Kaliningrad widow is demanding for his client compensation in the amount of 526,000 rubles (ed: about $21,000). “In January of 2003, my dad picked up mine and Maks's things, but they gave him no money,” said Alena Mikhailova. “Just clothing, my purse and all that was inside (it was sealed), and my husband's empty wallet.” Two and a half years later, however, the 'Nord-Ost' public organization gained access to records of the criminal case on behalf of the victims, and it became clear that there were specific records. The records stated that in such and such a row and in a certain seat they found a woman's handbag containing documents in the name of so and so. Nearby was a man's jacket, and in the pockets – identification, and a wallet with business cards and a certain amount of cash. When Alena Mikhailova met with former comrades in misfortune in Moscow on the third anniversary of the 'Nord-Ost', she also went to see the investigator. He advised her to write a statement demanding the return of money that was in her things. “After a time a document came: the money could not be found and the investigator who was running the case had died in a car crash. This was the official answer that I sent to Attorney Trunov, who is representing most of the claims by the hostages and the victims' families. It was not until October of this year that I learned from media reports, that the organization had filed a claim of looting. Just a couple of days ago I was officially notified that my claim was being taken into consideration. I know that there were claims of looting and such during Beslan and the apartment bombings and other places, but our case is the easiest to prove because the investigators documented everything in detail. For me the most important thing is not the actual amount of money, which would have been much more important to me six years ago when I was on maternity leave with a one year-old child. What is important is that this creates a precedent so that victims in other tragedies might find it easier to seek justice.” In 'Komsomolskaya Pravda' Views: 6251 | E-mail
