New York premiere of the ‘Nord-Ost’ hostage seizure

Норд-ОстIn the US there was a premiere of ‘I Admit Guilt’ by Natalia Pelevina. The play is dedicated to the hostage seizure that took place at Moscow’s Dubrovka Square in 2002. Attending the premiere were even some of the relatives of those killed during the terrorist attack.

The whole show revolves around a dialogue between two women — a hostage and a suicide bomber. “This is a play about a woman’s view of the terrible events, and about how, in spite of civilization’s barriers, we really have so much in common,” the director told RIA Novosti.

Natalia Pelevina admits that one of the main characters she created — the journalist Natasha, who by chance found herself among the hostages — was heavily influenced by the personality of Anna Politkovskaya, a well-known journalist who wrote political exposés and in her activities was very interested in the Chechen problem. According to investigators, leaders of the Chechen criminal underworld ordered her murder. The heroine on the play also tries to understand the worldview of the female terrorist who is preparing herself for death.

Bringing the play to the stage in New York was only possible thanks to financial support from sponsors, as well as assistance from volunteers.

On October 23rd, 2002, terrorists took hostage more than 916 people who had come to see the musical ‘Nord-Ost’ at a theater belonging to a Moscow bearings plant. The hostages were held for three days, until FSB commandos stormed the building on October 26th. 130 hostages were killed, according to official figures, though the ‘Nord-Ost’ public organization claims 174. All of the terrorists were killed during the assault.
