Nevsky Express death toll reaches 28

1The death toll in the explosion of Nevsky Express train, which occurred on November 27th, 2009, has increased to 28. The Health Ministry press office reported this on January 15th, and the message transmitted by 'Interfax'. Neither the name of the victim nor the address of the hospital where he died was specified.

On January 11th, the Ministry reported that there were still 11 victims of the terrorist attack in hospitals: seven in St. Petersburg (one in serious condition), and four in Moscow. Of the 28 who were slain, 25 were killed immediately in the crash, and three died later in hospitals. All victims have been identified. Government officials previously reported that compensation to the bereaved families would total one million rubles.

The Nevsky Express, en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg, was blown up on the stretch between Aleshinka and Uglovka, and as a result three cars derailed. About 90 people were injured in the crash. The power of the explosive device was estimated at seven kilograms of TNT, and a criminal case was initiated under the article of the law governing terrorism. It was combined with the case of an explosion that occurred at the same site some time later, when rescuers and investigators were already working on the scene.

Discovered in a village near the crash site was a house, in which the criminals who prepared the bombing of the train had apparently temporarily resided. Investigators disseminated sketches and verbal descriptions of the persons suspected of involvement in the terrorist attack.

In early December, the media reported that a significant number of deaths in the crash could have been due to unstable seating in the cars of the express: as a result of a blow they come off the floor and become an obstacle in the front of the express car. The Russian Railways said that all the parts of the cars meet safety standards, but they have decided to replace all the cars of the Nevsky Express.
