| Message to Putin from the ‘Mothers of Beslan’ committee |

 Of the 85 minutes on the tape (from the committee to Putin), only the first two are devoted to those three terrible days in September of 2004, and these were just those pictures that where seen around the world. There were no words, no tears, and no demands, just pictures and music. The mothers of these murdered children do not want their children to be in the spotlight once again, or their families and their emotions. They just want to know the truth about the CAUSES of this calamity. It turns out, however, that, besides the mothers, no one is interested.The material presented is really not a movie at all. It is a montage, or, as they say in television slang, ‘synchronous’, and has dialogue from the trial of the only terrorist captured alive. Characteristically, the main question (WHY the tragedy occurred) is not asked by the judge, nor by the prosecutor, but by an attorney, Teimuraz Chedzhelov. He is an elderly, and, perhaps because of this, brave man who holds the title ‘Honored Jurist of Russia’. The officials answer: former President of North Ossetia Dzasokhov, former Interior Minister Dzantiyev and his deputies, the fired chiefs of the highway patrol and the police department, an FSB general, the education minister, and the former secretary of the republic’s security council. One gets the impression that every one of these servants of the people are at best only serving him or herself. “There was no advance information about a terrorist attack,” swore Dzasokhov in court. “In the entire republic 700,000 rubles (ed: about $28,000) could not be found to dig a barrier trench to keep ‘illegals’ out of the city,” said former deputy minister of internal affairs Popov. He forgot to mention the cost of the new Mercedes sedans at the police department, for which he never seemed to have problems finding the money. “There was simply no one in charge of the hostage rescue headquarters,” said FSB General Andreyev, who was considered to be in charge of the headquarters. On September 10th, a week after the tragedy, Education Minister Levitskaya accidentally discovered that she was a member of this headquarters. The film is an hour and a half of just such confessions, as well as some disappointingly sensational eyewitness reports from the victims about at what and at whom the tanks fired during the assault. And also a few separately recorded appeals from ‘Mothers of Beslan’ committee chairman Susanna Dudiyeva to President V. V. Putin. “Even after meeting you, President Putin, nothing has changed in the investigation of the terrorist attack,” noted Susanna Dudiyeva. “Even now everyone is waiting for one single person to take charge and find out what happened in Beslan.” This is the meaning and purpose of the film.
