Investigation of the Politkovskaya murder extended to May |

The investigation into the murder of Novaya Gazeta reporter Anna Politkovskaya has been extended until May 7th, 2011, according to the Novosti news agency. Anna Stavitskaya, attorney for relatives of the murdered journalist, reported this. In October of 2010, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Attorney General’s Office filed new charges against Sergei Hajikurbanov related to the case. Hajikurbanov is a former major of the Moscow anti-organized crime unit. Virtually identical charges were filed against him during the first investigation. That inquiry ruled out abuse of power by FSB Lt. Col. Pavel Ryaguzov, as well as Ryaguzov’s extortion of businessman Edward Ponikarov. Investigators believe that Hajikurbanov received orders from certain persons disgruntled with Politkovskaya’s articles, and located the perpetrators, the Makhmudov brothers, and supplied them with weapons. Investigators speculate that as a reward for Anna Politkovskaya’s murder, the former police officer received a BMW-530 and a Ford Mondeo, as well as a Yamaha motorcycle. Novaya Gazeta writer Anna Politkovskaya was murdered on October 7th, 2006, in the apartment building where she lived in Moscow. In February of 2009 the Moscow military district court, on the basis of a jury verdict, acquitted the accused of the murder. This verdict was later overturned by the Supreme Court and remanded to the Prosecutor General for inclusion in a criminal case. That investigation is still ongoing. The person or persons who ordered the murder have as yet not been determined.
