October 26th, 2007. The same five degrees Celsius, the same traffic jams, the same voices on the radio who ask exactly the same thing as they did five, four, three, two, and one year ago today: Why did the rescued people die? Why, when they were still alive when they were loaded into buses and ambulances, were they dead on arrival at the hospitals? Why was the antidote not brought to the Botkin clinic until eight hours after the assault? Why did the emergency ministries rescuers know nothing about how to rescue gassed people? What was the gas?
Since morning, on the steps of the theatrical center hundreds of candles have been burning, and people carry flowers and toys. You do not have to go anywhere, remembering the same picture from last year and previous years. There are same faces of the 'Nor'easters', on which sorrow has merged with resentment.
Resentment at the authorities who have hidden the investigation into the tragedy from its victims for the sixth year in a row. Supposedly, because of «the highest state expediency», suffering individuals in Russia have no right to the truth. There is no one at the memorial service who could reveal the terrible state secrets of October 2002. There are no «top secret» Heroes of Russia who earned their medals at Dubrovka. There is no president — he left for Portugal, and last evening he laid flowers on the grave of the Portuguese poet Luis Camoes. There is not even the mayor of Moscow – he sent instead his deputy for social issues.
'Nord-Ost' has become stronger even than the former Berlin Wall. It also divides government from people. A tragedy at Dubrovka? What is that?
At today's meeting of the Federation Council, the nation's 'number three man' called for all firms engaged in the purchase and delivery of foodstuffs to be taken over by the government. Why? So that in a couple of years the 'Nord-Ost' survivors could finger rotten produce in state vegetable markets?
In faraway Neryungri, First Deputy Prime Minister Ivanov is convinced that «every high-level government official must travel frequently for his country.» We would like to ask him if that also includes Dubrovka on October 26th?
Deputy Prosecutor General of Russia Sydoruk said today that «in Ingushetia there has not been revealed a single weapons smuggling channel» (though every day there are shootings in that republic). Here is a simple question: have they determined how and by whom weapons were brought to Moscow for the fifty villains who seized 'Nord-Ost'?
In front of the television cameras on October 26th, 2002, the deputy minister of interior reported the end of the operation, which was supposedly 'bloodless'.
It is pure dejà vu, like the American comedy 'Groundhog Day', which in Russia has become a tragic farce.
