Terrorists are leaving Kazakhstan and moving to other countries  Political analysts evaluate risk of terrorism in three central Asian republics
The problem of terrorism in Kazakhstan is very specific, yet the dynamics of the threat’s manifestation are not systematic — political analyst Sergey Akimov in an interview with ‘total.kz’ correspondent.
“Eruption and subsidence of these threats indicate that the basis of this extremism and terrorism is artificial,” stated Akimov. “The concern is that such local terrorist groups carry out their own specific tasks and, once performed, they cease their activity. In this situation one can discuss spheres of influence or intimidation of the population. I remind you of the so-called ‘Soldiers of the Caliphate’ — a year ago they were talked about everywhere, but now they’re completely forgotten. This suggests that there is some sort of constant group in action, and mercenaries (they use) that complete their tasks go onto the back burner, or move to other locations.” According to the analyst, the problem of terrorism is possibly more relevant in neighboring Kyrgyzstan. “This is because the government and security forces are unable to control the problem at the appropriate level. Additionally, in Kyrgyzstan there is rampant demagoguery, and terrorism may be used in the struggle for power,” added the analyst. In his view, Uzbekistan serves as an example of correct counter-terrorism practices. At the end of the interview, Mr. Akimov stated, “ (In Uzbekistan) the government has the political will, since 10 years ago the issue of terrorism and extremism in Uzbekistan was big, while now they are close to the solving it.” Magamed Aslakhanov
