 The trial of a group of young persons accused of terrorism and murder has ended in Kazakhstan, according to the news agency ‘Kazakhstan Today’. The accused were tried for their involvement in events in the Aktobe region last July, where battles between militants and security forces have been going on.
Two of the defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, while the other two received imprisonments of 6 and 14 years. According to the publication, the court did not release any information on the identities of the accused. We only know that they were unemployed young persons. The situation in the Aktobe region (of Western Kazakhstan) worsened in early July when two policemen were shot and killed in the village Shubarshi (of the Temir region). The media at the time speculated that religious extremist committed the murders (in another theory, the murder was connected with oil smuggling in the region).
The authorities announced that six suspects were being sought for the murders, and a large-scale special operation was organized in the area, involving security service commandos and Interior Ministry soldiers. Several law enforcement officers were killed in the ensuing clashes with militants. In mid-July, the authorities announced that the extremist group had been destroyed. According to official reports, all six suspected of the murders of police officers were killed in Shubarshi.
