He was a graduate of the Kuban Medical Institute with
a master’s degree in medical sciences. He worked as a staff physician in the department of endoscopic
gynecology in Krasnodar
city hospital #2.He was a talented
surgeon and brilliant specialist of endoscopic gynecology who gave health to
thousands of women.
He received the Medal of Courage posthumously.
Oleg, or, as all those older than him knew him, ‘Olezhek’, grew up an only
child. His sister Sasha was not born
until 1987 when he was already in his third year of medical school.Even though no one spared the affection on
this dark-haired little boy, he did not grow up spoiled. On the contrary: even in childhood he clearly
demonstrated a personality of openness, kindness, and aversion to conflict.
He found schoolwork to be easy, like everything in
life, or so it always seemed. He was the
type of person who did not like to discuss his problems, or complain. If something good happened, then he would
certainly share his joy with everyone with a talent for describing it all
colorfully. It is possible that this is
why he had a reputation as a happy and fortunate fellow.Good fortune, however, had to be earned.Oleg was not one to cram for tests at the
last minute, but he had a remarkable ability to concentrate his efforts and
attention.Several days before a test he
ceased going out with friends or other amusements.Only the desk and a locked door
remained.Such was his concentration
while he was mastering all necessary information.Once he got his excellent test scores,
however, then nothing and no one could interfere with his enjoyment of life.
And, indeed, life was excellent!There
was no much to enjoy: rock music and the martial arts, handball and
literature.Everything that he liked was
the very best, the most staggering, and the most exquisite. His enthusiasm was infectious.Being with him was always interesting and
unusual, and so he always had a lot of friends at home, at school, in grandma’s
village, and later at the institute and everywhere in life.He never found it necessary to fight for the
leadership of a group, because a group without him was simply boring.
Oleg’s friends loved him, and continue to love
him.I have the impression that his main
need was a desire to share joy with his loved ones. When you went to visit the Magerlamov family,
you could almost always find one of his friends there, since there were so
many.Oleg won people’s hearts with
remarkable ease and they would remain friends for many years. He also gave to people life itself. Not just to his children, Dasha and Olezhek,
who are so similar to him.Dasha
inherited his kindness and aversion to conflict, while Olezhek has Oleg’s looks
and quick mind.Oleg also helped
infertile women receive the world’s greatest gift from Our Lord, the ability to
become mothers. He chose the field of
gynecology, and was a superb physician and splendid surgeon. It was due to my Uncle Oleg that I too
decided to become a doctor.
While I was a medical student, I was very impressed by
Oleg’s use of endosurgical intervention. It was truly impressive and beautiful, and to a certain extent looked
quite easy.Only later, when I began to
perform these operations, did I find out how “easy” it actually was, and how
much talent and hard work it takes to make it that way.For Oleg everything was always easy and
beautiful.His patients loved him, for
one could not help but love this tall, dark-haired beauty of a doctor who
lavished his “girls, beauties, young hens, and so forth” with care, attention,
and always emitted a positive attitude suggesting confidence in their cures.
He performed many operations. These were not only physically taxing, but
spiritually draining as well.Oleg,
however, was always cheerful, sharp-witted, and attentive. He was forever able, and I personally consider
this a unique ability, to note any change in one of his lady colleagues, such
as a new hairstyle, or jewelry and such, and he would mention it.If he liked it he would lavish it with
praise, and if not, he could cheerfully critique it without causing
offense.Almost five years have passed,
but the entire hospital staff misses Oleg. His portrait yet hangs in the offices and at the nurse’s station.Quite often, and always on the day of his
death, fresh-cut flowers stand by these pictures.
Oleg lived a short life, but a brilliant and valuable
one. There is some logic to his boiling
vitality, his active nature, and his breadth of interests and enjoyments. It was as if he never feared failure or would
be unable to accomplish something important.Oleg succeeded at quite a lot.He
healed many patients, made his contribution to medical science in defending his
master’s thesis, and even in the auditorium at ‘Nord-Ost’ he assisted the
hostages as best he could, and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Courage.
His home was full of people during those difficult
days of ‘Nord-Ost’.Although everyone
was terribly distressed and worried, they stayed cheerful in order to calm
Oleg’s wife Inna.Everyone did not just
hope, but was completely certain he would make it out of there, that nothing
would happen to him.It is awful, but
when reliable sources passed information about the storming of the theater, we
were not just encouraged, but unequivocally glad: Olezhek was alive and in the
hospital.Everyone rejoiced.Inna and two of Oleg’s close friends flew to Moscow and went looking
for him.But Oleg was not in one
hospital, or another, or a third…Later
it was one morgue after another, and they found him in one of these. It was an intolerably difficult event for the
frail and childishly defenseless ‘Innochka’, for Oleg’s sick father, and all
his friends and loved ones.We had
already rejoiced, and everyone was thinking about how they would hug Olezhek
and what they would say to him, which joke would be the funniest and most
fitting.He would have simply laughed;
he loved a good joke and had an excellent sense of humor.Perhaps, after what he had gone through, he
would not have the strength to smile, but we will never know.
Now only the memory remains.Everyone has his or her own.Everyone has his or her own tiny piece of the
warmth and light that Oleg so generously gave while alive.
All of Oleg’s friends, and especially his loved ones,
miss him a lot.It seemed that it would
get easier as the years passed, but the pain still remains. The only thing that comforts me is the faith
that we will meet again. It is possible
to put up with a little wait in order to meet such a well-loved person as Oleg.

I was a patient of Oleg Alamdarovich (Magerlamov) in 1994, when I was 19.He was Oleg Alamdarovich from Timashevsk, and
so everyone who knew him or his father came to him for help.My mother was no exception. You know, they sometimes use the term “doctor
from God”, and this was Oleg Alamdarovich.Anyone who was ever in his ward simply adored him.He always had a smile, and was cheerful and
full of energy.He would explain
everything and calm you down. And you
cannot even count how many women were able to become mothers thanks to him!
I again turned to him during my pregnancy in
1996.Oleg Alamdarovich was always happy
when one of his old patients came to him.He immediately remembered my diagnosis, did an exam, gave the
appropriate advice, and we agreed that I should come back two weeks before
term.I did not make it – we had
scheduled it for a Saturday, but I delivered on that Thursday.I did not see him again, but I heard from others
that he was still working.
When I found out that there were doctors among the
hostages helping others, I knew immediately who it was – he could not do
otherwise.
I would like to know what happened during his last
hours.
