Age 34; Russia, Moscow.

Olga Germanovna Ivanova was an unusually bright and candid person. Working in the welfare department for the Veshnyaka regional authority, she dealt with the problems and cares of the handicapped, people in very large families, and yes, even people who found themselves in difficult situations in life. She held out a helping hand to one and all, and never remained indifferent to another’s misfortune and pain.

Olga loved children, and to her two daughters she was the most loving mother in the world. The oldest girl, 13 year-old Anyuta, was with Olga at Dubrovka, but just as soon as there was a chance to save her, Olga literally shoved the girl into a crowd of frightened children, which the terrorists were going to release. This saved the girl’s life. Later she seized made a couple of calls on her cell phone to her mother, risking the wrath of the terrorists. Olga worried more about her children than herself, and asked her mother to calm the girls and care for them until she could return.

It was not just her daughters’ grief that mattered to Olga – she could not remain indifferent to a little person’s misfortune, even if it was the child of a complete stranger needing help. Late one autumn they found a homeless woman frozen to death under the Vykhino train station platform. By some miracle her two small children, a brother and sister, had survived. We found out that they had come from Ulyanovsk. Though it was not her responsibility, Olga could not turn away. She went to visit the children while they were hospitalized in Moscow, bringing them candy and toys. Later, not trusting the children to anyone else, she personally took them by train to Ulyanovsk, to enroll them in the orphanage. Parting with the children took a long time. Olga could not bear to leave them behind, and while they clung to her as tightly as their little arms could manage, tears flowed down Olga’s cheeks. She would give anything on earth in order to not see a child’s grief.

When they buried Olya, many, many people came to bid her farewell. They could not remain indifferent to this tragedy, either. It seemed as if there was a sea of humanity mourning and crying over this bright person. From her photograph, Olga looked back at us, smiling and beautiful and young – forever!
