A meeting for not just anybody
Среда, 04 Май 2011
ImageRelatives of those killed in the Beslan terrorist attack are not allowed to see the president

Some of the relatives of those killed during the terrorist attack in Beslan in September 2004 will not be allowed to meet with President Dmitry Medvedev. 'Voice of Beslan' stated this in an open letter to the president, a copy of which was received by Kasparov.ru on May 4th.

«Parents of children killed in the attack have repeatedly written you requesting a meeting, and hundreds of victims have signed petitions such as this in the hope that they will be heard, but the fears that our delegates would not allowed to see the President have been justified,» read the letter.

According to activists from 'Voice of Beslan', the government «has decided to form its own group of victim representatives.»

They are convinced that the meeting will be “just for show".

DNA test confirms U.S. eliminated Usama bin-Laden
Понедельник, 02 Май 2011
ImageA DNA test confirmed with 99.9 percent accuracy that the U.S. military destroyed «number one terrorist» and leader of al-Qaeda, Usama bin-Laden during a special operation in Pakistan, reported representatives of President Barack Obama's administration to the Associated Press.
In this case, Reuters notes that these test results for now give only a «high probability» of confirming the death of the ideological mastermind of international terrorism, while final results of the DNA analysis will be ready in a few days.

Confess this is hard to believe
Четверг, 14 Апрель 2011

ImageBelarusian law enforcements took less than two days to identify and detain those suspected of committing the terrorist act

At ‘May Day’ station I walk through a metal detector, the likes of which had never been seen on the Minsk subway until after the April 11th terrorist attack, just as there never used to be police patrols. The people in camouflage uniforms and berets showed up a few hours after the tragedy, while the stationary metal detectors were installed the following day.

My compact travel bag did not summon interest from law enforcement, but a disheveled guy who passed me just before the subway entrance was stopped and searched. It did not take long. The police worked quickly, politely, and without irritation.

The law enforcement bodies after their first examination of the scene now have no doubts as to what to label the explosion: this is an act of terrorism, the likes of which modern Belarus has never before known.

Surveillance cameras caught the moment of the explosion in the ‘October’ station of the Minsk subway, and footage was shown on Belarusian central television. For three hours after the explosion, the authorities made no official statement.

After the explosion the taxi-vans are carrying people free of charge. Russia’s a long way from such reciprocity (a reference to reported taxi overcharges following last year’s Moscow subway attacks — ed).

I passed by October Square. People coming out of the subway in smoke and ashes. Bunch of fire trucks.

A year after the terrorist attack in the Moscow subway
A year ago, on, March 29th, 2010, blasts at the Lubyanka and Park Kultury subway stations took the lives of 40 people, and injured 88. Dmitry Medvedev laid flowers at the site of the tragedy. Prosecutor General Chaika took the investigation of the case under special control, while politicians and bureaucrats vied with each other to propose new measures to fight terrorism. All of this is the standard program worked out by the authorities following any major tragedy in order to reassure citizens and show them: “We’re on the job and we care about your safety.” For a week the state television channels reported on how much compensation the victims would be paid, what programs were to be set up, and they aired threatening speeches. Then the tragedy moved to second place in “electoral significance” (as the Kremlin puts it), and the media no longer brings it up. Just like every year, when together every TV channel fails to note the anniversary of the Beslan tragedy.
